,
You know the value of a strong, independent press — and the Poynter Institute is actively working to defend it.
We’re launching our year-end campaign ([link removed]) today by highlighting three initiatives designed to keep the public informed and communities empowered.
1. Press Freedom Watch: From legal challenges and access restrictions, to intimidation and politicized investigations, journalists’ ability to report freely is under pressure. Poynter built a new centralized resource to clearly and factually document federal actions that threaten press freedom.
2. First Amendment beat: We’ve also shifted our resources to cover First Amendment-related issues full-time. Poynter’s newsroom has exposed the rise of fringe outlets in the White House press pool, campus crackdowns that may threaten prestigious journalism fellowships, and legally dubious efforts to punish independent news organizations — all while helping readers make sense of a rapidly shifting landscape.
3. Poynter Day: Our nonprofit school for journalists — originally called the Modern Media Institute — was officially established on Nov. 10, 1975. We’re establishing Nov. 10 as our annual giving day for supporters like you to help us continue this work.
Make a gift. Stand with Poynter. ([link removed])
, every dollar the Poynter Institute receives between now and Dec. 31 will help us support readers like you. If you care about journalism education, journalist safety, ethical reporting, or want to see a future where factual information thrives, I encourage you to give now.
Thank you for reading. It’s because of supporters like you that we can chart these next 50 years together.
With appreciation,
Aaron Sharockman
VP of Partnerships, Poynter Institute
