Dear Reader,

You may be familiar with the famous Mister Rogers quote: “When I was a boy and would see scary things in the news, my mother would tell me, look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Trying to keep up with the national news can feel extremely daunting, and coverage of “helpers” is often hard to find. It’s understandable if people want to disconnect from the news, but at Pittsburgh’s Public Source, we’re doing things differently, and it’s helping people feel more connected and in community.

We know there are many reasons people disengage from the news: lack of trust, overwhelm, digital fatigue or the sense that it’s just not for them. We know that the challenges our neighbors face are real, and important, and deserve to be examined and understood. But we also know that the resilience and care that people in our region display every day deserves to be highlighted. We believe journalism can be part of reconnecting people to each other and to the place they live.

That belief underlies many of our updates and innovations this year, from neighborhood zines ([link removed]) that tell the unique stories of a particular Pittsburgh place, to improved categorization of stories by neighborhood on our site, to over 130 community engagement activities our staff members have completed so far in 2025. Our coverage focuses on facts, not fearmongering. From first-person essays written by community members to investigations that result in change, we’re dedicated to showing what helps, not just what hurts. People tell us that our journalism is needed — but also that it makes them feel good about where they live and what they can do for their communities.

We’re just getting started. We have plans to make more zines and keep expanding our neighborhood coverage, showing up in person and uplifting the voices of people who need help and the helpers. But we can’t do it without you.

If you believe that community connection through journalism offers a way forward, please make a matched donation now, or get your new monthly gift matched 12x ([link removed]) , and help us keep going.
