Email from Rep. Hudson     Meet Richard | How Can I Help You? | Issues | Media Center | Contact me   Friends, While Washington politicians argue, the people of North Carolina keep working, and so do we. This week, our team was on the ground in North Carolina from Pinehurst to Burlington to Greensboro to Fort Bragg— meeting with families, small businesses, military leaders, veterans, and students who are focused on solutions, not political games. That’s what leadership looks like. And that’s what we’re delivering. On Thursday, I joined local leaders and Amazon to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Energy Way Tech Campus in Richmond County. This is a project that brings jobs, innovation, and long-term investment in our region. This $10 billion statewide initiative will help train workers, strengthen our rural economy, and prepare North Carolina to lead in data and technology. When companies like Amazon invest here, they’re saying what we already know: our people are second to none. I’m proud to see rural North Carolina leading the way in high-tech growth, and as Telecom Subcommittee Chairman on Energy and Commerce Committee, I’ll keep fighting in Congress to make sure Washington supports that momentum and doesn’t smother it with red tape and higher taxes. In Burlington, I visited Truliant Federal Credit Union to hear how they’re helping local families navigate the ongoing government shutdown. While Democrats in Washington continue to play politics, North Carolina institutions like Truliant are quietly stepping up to help their neighbors. I also met with students and staff at UNC Greensboro, where they’re doing incredible work supporting our military community and veterans through new programs in healthcare, technology, and lab innovation. UNCG is helping prepare the next generation of leaders who will strengthen national defense, grow our economy, and deliver results for those who served. The Energy and Commerce Committee focuses on technology and innovation, and bringing these results from UNCG and our communities back to Washington can ensure North Carolina continues to lead in research and innovation that directly benefits our troops and veterans. At Fort Bragg, I met with base commanders, active duty troops, and their families to discuss readiness, housing, and support services. Under President Trump’s leadership, we have focused on rebuilding our military, providing them the tools and resources - from adequate housing to next generation weapons capabilities to better recruitment - to take care of our troops. Today, as the Democrats’ shutdown drags on, those same families are at risk of missing paychecks because Senate Democrats refuse to act. I’m grateful for President Trump for looking out for our troops and finding ways to make sure they get PAID! It was also an honor to host the Defense Appropriations Subcomittee Chairman Ken Calvert at Fort Bragg Friday. He has the responsibility of funding out military in the House. So here’s the truth about this shutdown. House Republicans passed a clean, commonsense bill on September 19 to keep the government open, pay our troops, and protect seniors and veterans. Every North Carolina Democrat voted NO. Now, we’re 30 days into a Democrat Shutdown that’s hurting families across our state: State GDP is declining by $442 million every week — nearly $2 billion a month. 1.3 million North Carolinians on SNAP, including 535,000 children, face disruptions to food assistance. North Carolina has 79,000 federal workers and thousands of service members who could lose pay in the coming days. Consumer spending is down $681 million each month. And while working families tighten their belts, Democrats are holding out for $1.5 trillion in new spending and handouts for illegal immigrants. Republicans have voted 14 TIMES to fund SNAP, pay our troops, support veterans’ health care, and protect WIC nutrition for women and children. Democrats voted 14 TIMES to block it all. This is very real pain for working families, troops, and border agents — and Democrats are playing games with every one of them. Just six months ago, Chuck Schumer voted for the clean CR funding bill — the EXACT SAME bill that he’s voted against fourteen times in the past month. At the time, he said a shutdown would hurt the American people — and he is still right. Now, Schumer’s keeping the government closed and stopping food assistance to struggling Americans just to protect his own job. Everywhere I go — from the factory floor to the classroom to the base chapel — I meet people who just want their government to work as hard as they do. That’s what this week was about: staying focused, showing up, and getting results while Washington stalls. The people of this district deserve leadership grounded in service, faith, and common sense — not political brinkmanship. I’ll keep fighting to reopen the government, pay our troops, protect our veterans, and get America back on track.
