John,
At 1 AM on October 1, ICE agents conducted a military-style raid on an apartment complex in Chicago without any warrants for arrest. They broke down doors, threw flashbang grenades, and detained dozens of men, women, and half-clothed children outside with zip ties. The raid is one of dozens of instances of ICE terrorizing immigrant communities and those who defend them.
The American people didn’t vote for ICE to harass U.S. citizens, especially not without oversight, body cams, or accountability. They didn’t vote for ICE to violate people’s constitutional rights or their dignity.
That’s why I’m introducing a House Resolution to hold ICE and CBP accountable. It will bring transparency, professionalism, and oversight to these agencies.
My resolution, cosponsored by Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton and Reps. Jonathan Jackson and Jasmine Crockett, calls for:
✅ Mandatory body cameras for ICE and CBP agents
✅ Visible identification, no more masks, except in true safety emergencies
✅ Independent civilian review boards to investigate misconduct
✅ Transferring oversight of ICE to the Justice Department for proper accountability
As I told CBS News:
“This is about respecting law enforcement as professionals — but holding them to high professional standards. We should hold ICE officers to the same level of transparency and accountability we expect of police officers or FBI agents.”
Americans didn’t vote for ICE to violate constitutional rights or terrorize families in their own homes.
They voted for a nation that upholds the rule of law, protects due process, and treats every person with dignity.
