We need to step up and help families facing food insecurity.
Instead of ending their shutdown, Congressional Republicans have thrown 42 million Americans who rely on SNAP benefits to put food on the table into uncertainty.
But Republicans have created a long-term crisis beyond the shutdown. The budget they passed this year guts food assistance programs across the country, reducing thousands of meals and making life even harder for working families.
It’s cruel and shortsighted. And worst of all, it’s entirely avoidable.
Hunger is not a political tool. It’s a moral test, and we cannot fail it. That’s why I’ve been working around the clock to urge Republican leadership to return to the table and work with us to protect the programs that keep our communities strong.
But we can’t wait for Trump and Republicans to come around and do the right thing. It’s now on us to step up and help our neighbors.
