Weekend Reading

Hi Friend,

Over the past several weeks, the U.S. has bombed multiple boats in the Caribbean and the Pacific, killing at least 60 people. Now the Trump administration is escalating military deployments to the region—pushing the United States toward war with Venezuela.

These are extrajudicial killings. Without action, the death toll will continue to grow.

As a Quaker organization that believes in the power of truth, peace, and justice, we are called to bear witness against this aggression and hold the U.S. accountable.

Tell Congress to act now to stop the killing! [link removed]

STRONGER WITH IMMIGRANTS

From rapid response to legal defense, how we’re standing with immigrant communities [link removed]
By Marcia Aguiluz Soto, Jordan Garcia, and Alexandra Gonçalves Peña

Immigrants are being detained and disappeared. Families and neighborhoods are being torn apart. But across the U.S., people are banding together to protect all community members. AFSC is proud to support their efforts. We’re responding to ICE raids, helping to get people out of detention, and more. Here, AFSC staff describe what becomes possible when community members come together.

HEALING JUSTICE

Advancing racial justice in California [link removed]
By Fatimeh Khan

All people deserve fair and equitable treatment in the criminal legal system, free from bias or discrimination. Yet people of color continue to face racial bias in charging, sentencing, and prosecutorial decisions. Now, a new law is helping to change that in California, thanks to advocacy by AFSC and partners. The bill guarantees legal representation for any person who raises claims of racial discrimination in their cases.

BUILDING SUPPORT

The power of grassroots fundraising [link removed]

Each year, hundreds of Friends and other members of our dedicated community show up to support AFSC’s work for peace and justice. They are part of our governance committees, Corporation, and Board of Directors. Many of these volunteers are also active fundraisers for AFSC. Today, this grassroots support is more critical than ever. Learn more about how committed volunteers are building support for AFSC. [link removed]

Special thanks to our monthly donors, our Partners for Peace, for their ongoing support to make all our work possible.
