The government is still shut down, and at this point we are starting to wonder… did Schumer and the Democrats think this one through?
Let’s be clear: the continuing resolution (CR) that Senate Democrats have shot down 13 times is no different than the one that passed earlier this year with ease. So, what changed? The answer is as simple as it is concerning. Their radical left base got louder, and Senate Democrats are afraid of primary challenges.
Every week that the shutdown has continued Senate Democrats are attempting to pacify their left flank by demanding free healthcare for illegals and other insane leftist priorities. But there is another issue at hand – add-on COVID-era subsidies for Obamacare are expiring, and open enrollment starts today.
The Socialist Albatross
Obamacare has been Democrats’ albatross since its inception. It simply doesn’t work. It’s bankrupting our country and it’s making healthcare worse on average. But instead of acknowledging reality, Democrats have been propping it up with payoffs to the health insurance industry – and now the time has come to write another check.
Democrats fully understand that this shutdown is hurting the American people – air traffic controllers are working without pay, Social Security Administration services and veterans’ programs are delayed, and Medicaid telehealth appointments are halted. Even food stamps are now on pause. But this is not bothering Senate Democrats – this was part of the plan. The suffering that they are inflicting on the country gives them “leverage” in negotiations.
And it says a lot about what they care about.
Heritage Action in Action
Heritage Action Sentinels have been heavily engaged during the shutdown. Just this week, two more Sentinels were published in their local newspapers (Dennis Crouch of Ohio and Cyndie Lasher of Texas). Additionally, a group of Sentinels stopped by the office of Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-Nevada) to urge her to support a clean CR.
