Family fire has devastating consequences in communities across the country. As of today, 4.6 million children live in homes with access to unlocked or unsupervised loaded guns, and every day, eight children are unintentionally shot or killed by family fire.
Just this month, we saw a young boy hospitalized in Columbus, OH, after an unintentional shooting, a 16-year-old girl was killed in an unintentional shooting in Philadelphia, and a four-year-old child was unintentionally shot in an apartment in Houston, TX.
But these tragedies are preventable. Just the simple act of storing a firearm locked, unloaded, and separate from ammunition can greatly reduce incidents of family fire.
The revamped End Family Fire website includes new resources that empower gun owners with knowledge about the risks associated with having a firearm in the home, factors to consider in choosing the right firearm storage method, and secure storage options to protect themselves and their loved ones. And we know these resources have the power to save lives: After seeing End Family Fire PSAs, gun owners are up to five times more likely to seek information about secure storage, and over half begin storing their weapons more safely.

An Update on the Federal Government Shutdown and What it Means for Gun Safety |
Today marks 32 days since the federal government has been shut down. It’s also the day that those who rely on SNAP benefits, also known as food stamps, will not be issued new benefits because funding has run out.
Roughly one in eight people in the United States rely on SNAP benefits, meaning that millions of families and children will be in jeopardy. And while there is an emergency funding pool for emergencies or shortfalls, the Trump administration has refused to use this funding to maintain programs like SNAP, and has already voted to cut SNAP benefits in August in his “One Big Beautiful Bill Act."
In addition to the instability that food insecurity causes, it has also been identified as a significant risk factor for gun violence. Each 1% increase in food insecurity was associated with approximately 56 additional gun-related injuries per 100,000 people.
The reason we know about this connection between food insecurity and gun violence is because of research. This research helps us identify the root causes of the gun violence epidemic and develop solutions to combat it, which is why we desperately need to protect its funding. The Trump administration and the gun lobby’s friends in Congress are trying to not only cut funding for gun violence research but also ban federal funding of it altogether.

Disarm Hate: Honoring the Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue Shooting Victims |
Seven years ago this week, 11 people were killed and seven others were injured in an anti-Semitic attack on the Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh, PA. The gunman used an AR-15-style semi-automatic rifle and three handguns to carry out the hate-filled attack.
Hate and easy access to firearms are a recipe for disaster. Each year, there are over 10,300 reported victims of hate crimes involving a firearm, which includes incidents in which an individual is threatened or intimidated with a gun.
While we may not be able to change a person’s beliefs or the hatred they hold, we can keep guns away from those who are intent on causing harm. That is why we at Brady have called on Congress to disarm hate for years and prohibit those who have been convicted of a hate crime from being able to legally possess a firearm. So today, in honor of those who lost their lives at Tree of Life, and for all others who have been victims of hate crimes, take action and tell Congress to disarm hate. |
Zombies, the Apocalypse, and Guns |

Happy Halloween, friend! This scary season, we’re taking a look at how American zombie movies and shows use guns, especially when compared to non-American zombie content.
In America, there are more guns than people and more gun dealers than McDonald’s and Starbucks combined. No other country has as many civilian-owned firearms.
This means that most American zombie movies are dominated by firearms, while characters in non-American zombie movies don’t often have guns and therefore use other means to kill the monsters. It also means that far more characters in American zombie movies fall victim to the devastation of gun violence, as opposed to being killed by the undead creatures.
