On the Suspension of SNAP Benefits

If the Trump Administration refuses to comply with two court orders compelling it to release contingency SNAP funds, the Republican Shutdown of the federal government will cause SNAP recipients to begin missing their food assistance payments for the first time in the program’s 60-year history starting on November 1st. 42 million Americans nationwide and 3 million of our neighbors across New York rely on SNAP to keep themselves and their families fed, and consequently, this potential lapse in funding represents a dire threat to their food security and wellbeing. While the Trump Administration is required by law to disburse these payments, it has not only indicated its imminent refusal to do so, but it has gone as far to state its intention to ignore the two court orders that demand the release of emergency SNAP funding.

Thankfully, New York has declared a State of Emergency under the direction of Governor Hochul. With it, Governor Hochul has pledged a total of $106 million to support food banks, soup kitchens, and more outlets trying to help families get emergency food assistance. The governor’s decisive leadership in this moment will save lives, and I am eternally grateful to her for her action. However, while these emergency funds are necessary, they are far from enough. The only acceptable path forward is for the Trump Administration to disburse the SNAP payments they are legally required to administer, and ensure 42 million Americans do not go hungry.

To the people of Brooklyn, know that we will get through this. Our community is defined in its resilience, its strength of character, and above all, the solidarity shared among all our neighbors. If you need assistance in the difficult days and weeks ahead, please reach out to my office at (718)287-1142. And if you need help ensuring you and your loved ones do not face food insecurity, please see this attached list of food banks in Brooklyn, or visit my website at www.clarke.house.gov/bfb for an exhaustive list of food banks across our borough. Through our unity, there is nothing Brooklyn cannot overcome.
