Dear Neighbor,

As you know, the federal government is still shut down, and every day, more families are feeling the impact.

One of the most serious consequences is what is happening with SNAP — the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as CalFresh in California.

Because of the shutdown, the Trump administration has announced that it will stop fully funding SNAP benefits starting November 1st. That means 42 million people across the country, including 5.5 million Californians, could lose access to the critical food assistance they rely on. That’s 16 million children, 8 million seniors, 1.2 million veterans, and 4 million people with disabilities who will go hungry.

Let me be clear: Children in the richest country in the world should not go to bed hungry. Families should not have to worry about where their next meal will come from because of the Republicans’ dysfunction.

President Trump has everything he needs to prevent this. He did it before during the government shutdowns in his first term and he can do it again.

Instead, he is refusing to use SNAP’s contingency funds to keep benefits flowing — even though his administration has the legal authority and funds necessary to do so. Just today, a federal judge ordered the Trump administration to release those reserve funds and continue paying benefits, recognizing that the government has both the means and the obligation to act.

Como saben, el gobierno federal sigue cerrado, y cada día más familias sienten el impacto.

Una de las consecuencias más graves es lo que está sucediendo con SNAP, el Programa de Asistencia Nutricional Suplementaria, conocido como CalFresh en California.

Debido al cierre, la administración Trump ha anunciado que dejará de financiar completamente los beneficios de SNAP a partir del 1 de noviembre. Eso significa que 42 millones de personas en todo el país, incluidos 5.5 millones de Californianos, podrían perder el acceso a la asistencia alimentaria crítica de la que dependen.
