Dear John, 

I reach out to you often to share stories of families forced to flee and the work we are doing together to protect them.

But this time, it is more personal than ever. Today, I am writing to you not just as part of UNHCR, but as someone from Sudan, watching a place I call home go through unimaginable suffering.

In El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, brutal fighting has forced thousands of people to flee. Families with children are arriving exhausted, hungry, and terrified, having endured unimaginable hardship on their journey to safety.

It is heartbreaking to hear the voices of my people and recognize their language in their stories of loss and fear. It has been more than two years since the war in Sudan began and every day I worry about my relatives, my friends, and the streets I once played in as a child. I wonder if they will ever be the same again.

My heart aches for my country, Sudan. The pain is too real, too close, and I cannot look away.

My colleagues at UNHCR are doing everything possible to reach those displaced by providing emergency shelter, clean water, and vital relief items. But with so many people in need, our resources are stretched thin.

Please stand with the people of Sudan today. They need us more than ever.
