Dear John,
As LDAD works each day to respond to the extraordinary threats facing this country, we ask today for you to support LDAD’s brief fall fundraising drive.
Throughout 2025, this administration has undertaken executive actions at a dizzying pace, designed to overwhelm opposition and distract the media from focusing on the breadth and scope of the destruction. This destruction – of governmental agencies, of the rule of law, and of the norms and principles that are foundational to a civil society – affects all of us.
The administration’s actions are reviving diseases previously eradicated, threatening the quality of the air we breathe and the water we drink, putting the lives of judges in danger, and allowing masked government agents to snatch people off the street without reason and detain them in unknown locations, preventing them from communicating with their family or a lawyer.
The ultimate metaphor is the wreckage of the White House itself, undertaken by the President without consultation or compliance with requirements that would apply to any other person in America. The administration’s actions have defied the Constitution and undermined the rule of law, and the system of checks and balances that are essential to our democracy.
Lawyers Defending American Democracy has been fully engaged in multiple ways to challenge these actions and galvanize others to act, as the following examples illustrate.
- LDAD has filed numerous amicus briefs, many in collaboration with leading scholars and other organizations, including:
-
In the criminal proceeding against former Mayor Eric Adams, asking the judge to consider the unethical conduct of then Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove (now a federal judge) under the Rules of Professional Conduct.
- In support of law firms targeted by Executive Orders that imposed draconian sanctions for representing clients or taking positions that the President did not support.
- In opposition to ICE’s policy restricting unannounced visits by Members of Congress.
-
In partnership with LDAD’s Maryland Chapter, opposing the administration’s lawsuit against federal judges in Maryland, a troubling attempt to sanction an entire federal jurisdiction in retaliation for rulings the President disliked.
- LDAD has continued its work focusing on Project 2025’s authoritarian roots and its ties to the administration’s executive actions, explaining the impacts on everyone.
-
LDAD, along with a distinguished coalition of rule of law advocates, filed a detailed Ethics Complaint against Attorney General Pamela Bondi, alleging that Department of Justice lawyers were terminated or forced to resign following demands made either by Ms. Bondi or senior DOJ leadership that would have caused these lawyers to violate their own ethical obligations under the rules of professional responsibility.
-
LDAD has launched Meeting the Moment – A Call for Lawyers to Lead, an initiative designed to galvanize lawyers across the country to use their skills and expertise to engage businesses, the media, nonprofit organizations, faith communities, civic and community groups, and others to convey what is at stake and why it should matter.
This is just a sampling of our work – and it can only happen through your generosity. We ask for your support now as we look to a busy fall doing all we can to address the crisis we face. Your donation will allow us to continue operating at the highest level.
In the words of LDAD Board Chair and co-founder Scott Harshbarger, “Thank you for keeping the faith!” With your continued help, we know we will make a difference.
Thank you,
Lawyers Defending American Democracy
