*THE LEGISLATURE WILL BE BUSY IN 2026*
"Republicans are focused on the issues that matter most to Maine citizens"
This is Assistant House Republican Leader Katrina Smith of Palermo with the Weekly Republican Radio Address.
The Legislature returns in January with over 500 bills to consider —
hundreds carried over from last session, plus new department bills added to the pile.
Recently, the ten-member Legislative Council — six Democrats and four Republicans — reviewed 257 proposals and approved 82 more for next session.
Of those, 71 Democrat bills and just 11 Republican bills were allowed in.
Republican efforts to increase transparency in school budgeting and ensure
healthier food stamp purchases by restricting junk-food spending were rejected.
At the same time, Democrats advanced bills blocking cooperation
with federal immigration enforcement.
Republicans will strongly oppose these dangerous proposals
that undermine the law and threaten public safety.
Meanwhile, 202 spending bills remain on the Appropriations Table —
even after Democrats ballooned the state budget.
and raised taxes again on seniors, workers, and low-income Mainers.
One thing is clear — Republicans will continue to fight
for Maine’s workers, seniors, and families
to keep more of their hard-earned money.
We’ll advocate for the Working Families Tax Cut Act
and push to end artificially high electric rates
that reward out-of-state corporations
and green-energy profiteers.
Even in the minority, Republicans are exposing
how far Maine’s quality of life has declined.
We won’t rest.
We’ll keep offering common-sense solutions
to build a better, more prosperous Maine.
