ACT NOW: Tell Speaker Johnson to swear in Rep.-elect Grijalva now >>
John,
Imagine winning an election – fair and square – and being told you can’t take your seat.
That’s what’s happening right now to Arizona’s newest congresswoman.
Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva won her election in a landslide last month. But five weeks later, Speaker Johnson is still refusing to swear her in – marking the longest delay for any rep.-elect to be seated after winning a special election. [1]
That means Rep. Grijalva – and the over 800,000 Arizonans she represents – have now lost out on a full month of representation in Congress. No one to help with veterans benefits, Social Security, or immigration casework. No one to vote on legislation that impacts their lives.
TAKE ACTION: Tell Speaker Johnson that it’s time to do his job and swear in Rep.-elect Grijalva now >>
While Johnson stays silent about his motives, many observers note the timing: Grijalva has promised to be the 218th vote needed to force a House vote to release government files related to Jeffrey Epstein. [2]
No matter the reason, it’s an attack on democracy itself. Voters in Arizona made their choice fair and square. They deserve representation – just like every other district in the country.
John, Speaker Johnson has already sworn in newly elected Republicans within 24 hours of their elections. [3] There’s no excuse for this partisan delay.
We need to draw a line in the sand. If the party in power can just refuse to seat lawmakers, it means elections don't have consequences and voters don't have a voice.
Tell Speaker Johnson to STOP playing political games and swear in Rep.-elect Grijalva immediately >>
Every day he waits, he’s silencing an entire congressional district and undermining the principle of fair representation that holds our democracy together.
Thanks for speaking out,
The team at Common Cause
