On this day 84 years ago, Freedom House was founded on the basis of a simple but powerful idea: that the United States and the world needed a consistent, nonpartisan voice to champion global freedom in the face of tyranny. Having begun amid the horrors of World War II, our mission has evolved with the times—but we have never wavered from the fundamental goal of building a future where all people can live in freedom.

In recent weeks, we've shared stories about our efforts to free political prisoners, defend religious freedom, and stand with journalists under attack. We are deeply proud of our team's tireless work, and profoundly grateful for your partnership, which makes that work possible.

The world is now in the midst of a nearly two-decade recession in global freedom, but we are confident that the future will be brighter. A turn in the tide is brought closer every day by your continued partnership, engagement, and support

History's greatest breakthroughs for freedom and democracy have come when dedicated people from all walks of life joined together and stood up for the fundamental rights which every individual is entitled. This collective strength is a force that has toppled the walls of authoritarian states, broken the iron grip of dictators, and ended long reigns of oppression. It will do so again.
