# [#]Last week, Congressman Juan Vargas and I went to inspect the basement of the San Diego federal courthouse after reports that people were being detained underground in harsh, unsanitary conditions. ICE turned us away.
This week, it happened again.
Alongside Reps. Sara Jacobs and Mike Levin, we returned to the courthouse to demand answers. Once again, ICE officials blocked our entry – denying access to four members of Congress who have both the right and the responsibility to conduct oversight.
We’ve heard deeply troubling reports of detainees being held for days on end, without beds, privacy, or showers – some after simply showing up for routine immigration check-ins.
These are not dangerous criminals. They are parents, caregivers, and community members – and they deserve to be treated with dignity.
The cruelty and secrecy we’re seeing are unacceptable. I’m fighting for transparency and humane treatment for everyone in federal custody – but I need your help to keep pushing back against this culture of impunity and obstruction.
When government agencies operate behind closed doors, democracy itself is at risk. That’s why I’ll keep showing up, speaking out, and shining a light – no matter how many times they try to slam the door.

This work isn’t easy. Taking on entrenched systems of power never is. But together, we can keep pushing until our government lives up to its promise of justice for all.
Thank you for standing with me.
