John,
I’ve been thinking a lot about what this shutdown really means for families — not just in Washington, but in the small towns, rural communities, and city neighborhoods all across America, where people are doing their best to make ends meet.
Because behind all this chaos, there are real people who are scared right now. SNAP funds are running out. Food bank shelves are stretched thin. And families are wondering how they’ll get through the next week.
The truth is simple: Donald Trump could release those emergency SNAP funds today. He has the power to do it. But he’s choosing not to — choosing to let people starve to make a political point.
And now, the Trump administration is calling it “disastrous” to get those funds out to the people who need them most.
But I can’t think of anything more disastrous than a child going to bed hungry in the richest nation on earth. That’s the disaster. That’s the moral failure here . Forty-two million Americans depend on SNAP to feed their families, and too many of them are now wondering how they’ll get through the week.
I’ve met too many families already stretched to their limits. I’ve seen the quiet shame on a parent’s face when they can’t afford enough groceries. I’ve heard from teachers who keep granola bars in their desks because too many kids are showing up hungry.
It shouldn’t be this way — and it doesn’t have to be.
If the Trump administration truly cared about working families, they’d release the funds today. But we’ve all seen what their priorities are and compassion has never been one of them.
So, I’m standing with food banks and community organizations across Vermont and the country doing this lifesaving work. Because every family deserves dignity. Every child deserves a full belly. And every person deserves to know their community won’t let them go hungry.
