Washington, D.C. | www.mpac.org | October 30, 2025 — Throughout our nation’s history, people of faith have suffered discrimination because of how they worshipped God. Jews, Catholics, and Latter-day Saints (Mormons) were once vilified in this country as foreign, sub-human or even dangerous—accusations rooted in ignorance and fear. Today, the same patterns of prejudice are actively being directed toward Muslims in America.
We are deeply troubled by recent political attacks against Muslim public servants and political candidates, such as the hateful ads targeting Zohran Mamdani—falsely claiming that he would celebrate 9/11 if it happened today. Such rhetoric is not only untrue but deeply un-American. These tactics exploit fear for political gain and incite prejudice against our Muslim neighbors, friends, and fellow citizens.
We deplore this manipulation of faith and ethnicity to sow division. It places everyday American Muslims under suspicion and subjects students, workers, and families to mistrust and hostility. As people of faith, we reject this moral corruption of the public square. Scripture calls us to something far higher: “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18, echoed in Mark 12:31). Even when we have political differences--and it is natural that we should—our faith traditions demand that we value the spirit of God in every human being and stand up when any community is targeted because of who they are or what they believe.
We affirm our belief in the unity of the human family, with all its beautiful diversity. We believe that the strength of America lies in our shared commitment to the principle of E Pluribus Unum—“Out of many, one.” This ideal calls on all of us to ensure that Muslims, like people of every faith and background, be fully included in American civic life.
At this moment, we are being tested—both in our patriotism, and in our humanity. We call on our fellow Americans to reject fear, to stand for justice, and to remember that true security lies not in vilifying the other but in solidarity. When we defend the rights and dignity of one faith, we defend the integrity of all faiths.
Together, we pray and work for an America that lives up to its highest ideals: a nation where liberty of conscience is protected for everyone, and where love of neighbor triumphs over hatred and fear of the alien.
