Hi John,

You may have seen some reports about proposed new federal Health and Human Services rules from the Trump Administration targeting access to gender-affirming care for trans youth – while these rules have not been finalized and are not in effect, I wanted to reach out directly to break through the noise, share facts, and express support to families and young folks who may be reeling.
1. These rules are not finalized, and are not yet in effect: HHS and the Center for Medicaid and Medicare (CMS) has been considering these proposed rules targeting Medicaid and Medicare coverage of care and care provided at hospital systems for many months. Today media outlets reported ([link removed]) on the text of the proposed rules for the first time. While these rules would severely impact many large providers of gender-affirming care for trans youth across the country, they would not constitute a national ban on gender-affirming care. 2. There ARE still pathways to safe, legal care regardless of where you live: Even if the proposed rules go into effect, many providers around the country will still be ready and able to provide care for trans youth. The Trans Youth Emergency Project will be here to help families get connected with these providers and to provide travel grants. We encourage anyone concerned about losing their provider to reach out. Click here to fill out our intake form. ([link removed]) We also encourage you to talk to your provider – not just the individual practitioner, but those who run clinics – about how important this care is for your child and how you need them to do everything they can to keep their doors open.
3. We will never stop having the backs of trans youth: I know this is a scary moment for families of trans youth around the country, after years of intensifying attacks. But there are millions and millions of us who stand with trans youth – and will be here every single step of the way. We will not let these attacks stop us from showing up and doing everything we can to protect care access. If you're able, donate to support the Trans Youth Emergency Project to help us continue this life-saving work. ([link removed])

I hate that this is happening, just like I hate the way ICE is terrorizing immigrant communities, just like I hate the way that people will lose SNAP benefits on November 1st. It's morally wrong, and it's what happens when hate and degradation drive policy. It hurts the individuals being targeted – far too often right now, kids – and it hurts all of us, and the soul of our nation.

What I can tell you is this: We will never stop pushing with everything we've got to build a South, and a country, where everyone is free and everyone can thrive. That's not empty rhetoric in a tough moment – it's how we move forward, by digging deep into the core of our values, by standing shoulder to shoulder with everyone else feeling the outrage and grief of this time, and by always leading with love.

Thank you for being in it with us,
