**THE FORUM DAILY**
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announced yesterday that he is looking to end the use of H-1B visas at public universities and colleges in the state, reports Danielle Prieur of Central Florida Public Media [link removed].
DeSantis argued that the use of H-1B visas at universities takes jobs away from Americans, but some university leaders are pushing back.
"Republican lawmakers in Tallahassee are pressuring colleges and universities to beef up their hard sciences, their engineering, their programs that they think create instant careers for students," said Robert Cassanello, a professor at the University of Central Florida and statewide president of United Faculty of Florida. "[A]ttacking H-1B visas is also going to attack those same programs, and they're going to drive off the professors teaching those programs."
Elsewhere, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced an end to automatic extensions for some immigrants’ work permits, reports Andrew Kreighbaum of Bloomberg Law [link removed].
"These are individuals ... already working, they’ve already been vetted, they’ve timely filed their paperwork. And they are being punished based on government delays," said Shev Dalal-Dheini, director of government relations at the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

**MORE WORKFORCE WOES** — Following on a theme we covered yesterday — Sky Chadde of Investigate Midwest [link removed] takes an in-depth look at farmers’ labor challenges amid immigration enforcement and the government shutdown. In his column for Bloomberg [link removed], Jonathan Levin discusses immigration-related workforce challenges more broadly. Like Levin, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio addresses America’s demographic challenges in his piece in The Tablet [link removed]. That’s an aspect we’ve addressed as well [link removed].
**TOO FAR** — Even Texans who’ve supported a strong federal response at the border believe the administration’s immigration policies have gone too far, Abby McCloskey writes in her Bloomberg [link removed] column. A recent University of Houston poll found that 6 in 10 Texans oppose the suspension of asylum petitions, for example. Separately, according to a Migration Policy Institute analysis [link removed], at least 70,000 minors and 283,000 parents in the Houston area are at risk of deportation, reports Camille Phillips of Houston Public Media [link removed]. The report also highlights the negative impact of immigration enforcement on children's mental health.
**MISLEADING** — A video the DHS shared on social media regarding immigration raids in Washington, D.C., contains old or unrelated clips recorded in different states, report Drew Harwell and Joyce Sohyun Lee of The Washington Post. [link removed] Experts are concerned about the effects of misleading and polarized content. "The goal of a law enforcement organization should be to de-escalate. And the way you de-escalate is by providing accurate information," said John Cohen, a former DHS official.
**DURANGO** — After 24 hours of peaceful protests in front of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement field office in Durango, Colorado, federal agents sprayed pepper spray and tear gas into the crowd, report Scout Edmondson and Christian Burney of The Durango Herald [link removed]. The protesters gathered to support a father and two children arrested within the community. Don't miss Durango Police Chief Brice Current’s statement about protecting the whole community, as reported by Allison Sherry of Colorado Public Radio [link removed].

**P.S.** Southeast Asians in Iowa gathered recently for a picnic to honor the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and the state’s welcome of Vietnamese and other refugees, Jane Nguyen writes in her Substack, The Asian Iowan [link removed].
