As we head into a SCOTUS new term, the PRH Policy team is recapping some of the shameful decisions from this past term—from upholding state bans on gender-affirming care for trans youth to blocking Medicaid patients' access to Planned Parenthood.

This upcoming term we can expect the Court to continue their crusade of undermining our fundamental rights and freedoms. SCOTUS will hear cases attacking transgender athletes, conversion therapy bans, voting rights, and the regulation of anti-abortion centers.

A horrifying new South Carolina Senate bill seeks to ban nearly all abortions with almost no exceptions and make possession of abortion medication a felony. Charleston physician and PRH Fellow Dr. Kelsey Loeliger warned the bill could scare health care professionals away from providing abortions out of fear of legal repercussions, even when it would be legal.

“I would not be able to find an anesthesiologist or nurse or a hospital staff member to help participate in that care because the fear that a ban like this causes is devastating.”

SCOTUS Hears Oral Arguments on Harmful Conversion Therapy

The Supreme Court is deciding whether states can protect young people from conversion therapy— but there is no debate in medicine.

Every major health organization condemns it for the harm it inflicts on LGBTQ+ youth. "The evidence is clear: conversion therapy is life-threatening," says Dr. Aisha Mays, an adolescent medicine physician in California and PRH Board Member.

We urge the Court to protect young people—their lives and our collective future are at stake.

PRH Files Amicus Brief : Restoring the Promise of Maryland’s Safe Haven Law

A Baltimore mother used Maryland's Safe Haven Law—designed to protect parents who safely surrender their newborns—and was punished for it.

PRH and Doing Right By Birth (DRBB) are urging the Maryland Supreme Court to review lower court decisions that punish postpartum parents for using this law exactly as intended.

"Using Maryland's safe haven law as a basis for a neglect finding will endanger maternal and infant health, especially for Black birthing people who already experience worse maternal health outcomes," said Dr. Jamila Perritt, PRH President & CEO.
