Last week, ADL celebrated Governor Brian Kemp signing into law House Bill 426 - the "Georgia Enhanced Penalties for Hate Crimes Act," which goes into effect immediately. ADL leads the Hate Free Georgia Coalition, which played an important role in securing the passage of HB 426.
“Today, we are elated to participate in this historic moment for Georgia, which was decades in the making,” said Dr. Allison Padilla-Goodman, ADL Vice President, Southern Division.
To learn more about the passage of this important bill, please watch this week's webinar that included insights from former Georgia Governor Roy Barnes, Atlanta Journal Constitution statehouse reporter Maya Prabhu and ADL’s Southern Division VP Allison Padilla-Goodman, who was a lead advocate for the bill.

#StopHateForProfit Reacts to Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg's Townhall Address
On June 17th, we asked companies to act against hate and disinformation being spread by Facebook in our campaign #StopHateForProfit. Advertisers were asked to temporarily pause their advertising on Facebook and Instagram to force Mark Zuckerberg to address the catastrophic effect that Facebook has had on our society.
Faced with this tidal wave, Mark Zuckerberg responded with a number of small changes. Facebook will apply their hate policy to ads as if it was some new revelation, while not addressing hate more broadly in groups and posts. Voter misinformation may be a bit harder to spread the day of the election (but still will run rampant the rest of the time). And posts that call for violence will still be allowed if they come from someone “newsworthy” but they will now be labeled. None of this will be vetted or verified - or make a dent in the problem on the largest social media platform on the planet.

Supreme Court Decision in Espinoza v. Montana Dept. of Revenue – Summary and Implications
On June 30, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a deeply troubling religious freedom decision in a case entitled Espinoza v. Montana Dept. of Revenue
involving a Montana tuition tax credit program. Dismayingly, the Court reinstituted a program previously struck down by the Montana Supreme Court that indirectly funds private K-12 schools with “scholarships” that parents could use for tuition at any participating school. The participating schools included religious schools that indoctrinate faith or discriminate against students on the basis of religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or other categories.
