The RCMP division in British Columbia estimates it would cost $12.6 million to conduct its part of the gun confiscation, according to documents we got through access-to-information requests. That’s just for B.C.
And that doesn’t even include the cost to pay for the confiscated firearms.
So, we filed another access-to-information request to get the costs from other RCMP divisions across the country.
Suddenly the government decided the RCMP shouldn’t share any more cost projections!
Just compensating firearm owners for their confiscated guns could cost up to $756 million, according to the Parliamentary Budget Officer. But the government is breaking access-to-information laws to hide the administrative costs and that’s a big deal.
The RCMP union says Ottawa should focus resources on gun smugglers and criminals rather than licensed gun owners. The Toronto Police Association says the same thing. And polls show average Canadians agree with the police.
Knowing the real cost of the gun confiscation matters because it shows the resources diverted from fighting criminals and the boondoggle this will be for taxpayers.
