Hi John,

The Freethought Equality Fund is thrilled to tell you that Nancy Goroff (NY-1) won the Democratic primary election yesterday. With your help, Goroff could become the first newly elected nontheist to Congress. On election night on June 23, Goroff was behind by 164 votes but when the final absentee ballot was counted yesterday she won by 630 votes.

The general election could be just as close. Goroff is taking on Republican incumbent Lee Zeldin who was a member of Trump's impeachment defense team and narrowly won re-election in 2018 with just 51.5% of the vote. A short bio of Dr. Goroff is below, as is a link to support her campaign -- please be as generous as you can.

Goroff's slender victory is a perfect example of how every vote counts and the importance of the atheist and humanist community being active in the electoral arena.

Nancy Goroff is running for Congress in the New York 1st Congressional District. For the past twenty-two years, Goroff has taught at Stony Brook University and for the past two and a half years she has served as chair of the Chemistry Department. She will bring her academic training and experience to Congress to “trust the facts, find solutions, and work with everyone with good ideas.” Her policy priorities include: taking action to address the climate crisis, expanding access to quality affordable health care, defending reproductive rights, amending the Civil Rights Act to protect the rights of the LGBTQ community, developing innovate and good paying jobs in her district, and passing common sense gun legislation to end gun violence. Goroff identifies as a secular Jew.
