Cache Reward
Red squirrel in a tree

The American red squirrel is the *ultimate larder hoarder of Wyoming’s coniferous forests.* [ [link removed] ] As the shorter, cooler days of autumn arrive, a tree squirrel’s instincts kick in and it begins to gather and store as much food as possible. Some species store it all in one place — in a larder of sorts, no different than the pantry in your kitchen — while others scatter it all around in countless hiding places, similar to an Easter egg hunt.

"Wyoming Wildlife" Photo Contest open for entries

Wyoming Wildlife annual photo contest

Photographers of all ages and skill levels can have their work published in "Wyoming Wildlife "magazine as part of the *magazine’s annual photo contest* [ [link removed] ], which is now accepting submissions. Contestants can submit up to 10 photos across all four categories: wildlife, flora, scenic and recreation.

Game and Fish urges residents to secure bear attractants

Bear on porch

As the seasons shift and bear activity increases, we remind residents and visitors to be bear aware. To reduce the risk of problems with bears on or near your property, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department urges residents to *secure all attractants* [ [link removed] ].

Fire safety is a must this fall season

Campfire

Seven years ago, an abandoned warming fire ignited the surrounding forest and burned more than 61,000 acres and destroyed 58 homes in the Roosevelt Fire south of Jackson. Hot and uncontrolled *fall fires* [ [link removed] ] can cause devastating damage to the surrounding communities and affect hunting seasons and wildlife habitats.

Viral disease detected in birds around the state

Dove

The detection of avian paramyxovirus, *a viral disease that often affects doves and pigeons [ [link removed] ]*, was recently found in Wyoming. Eurasian collared-doves from Casper, Green River, Riverton and Rock Springs tested positive for avian paramyxovirus, which can spread rapidly in areas where birds congregate and can cause large die-offs in pigeon and dove populations.
