Dear Friends,

We are excited to announce our new partnership with the Washington Post’s The Lily, its platform focused on women’s issues. I will pen a monthly column that will highlight IWPR’s research, provide timely commentary, and help shape the national conversation on the issues that are important to the women and families we care most about.

Our first column, entitled: I felt like I had to go part-time when my kids were young. This shouldn’t be the norm explores how women internalize the responsibility and burden of care, and the impact it has on their careers and overall well-being.

As stay-at-home orders are lifted and schools across the country struggle to develop plans to safely re-open in the fall, women and families are scrambling to figure out care. Continuous and high-quality childcare and provisions for children who cannot return to a full-time academic schedule will be critical to women re-entering the workforce and sustaining employment.

Last month the economy added about 4 million jobs, a fraction of those lost since the start of the pandemic, but the Childcare sector is still 25 percent below its February employment rate—potentially resulting in a net loss of nearly 4.5 million child care slots. There’s a crisis emerging and we’re working with our partners in the field to figure it out.
