John, Have you been following what’s happening in Missouri? First, the Trump White House targeted Missouri for a mid-decade map redraw that would give Republicans more seats. The Missouri GOP followed orders without batting an eye, passing an egregious gerrymander with only Republican votes. Now, Missourians are mobilizing to overturn the gerrymandered map through the state’s referendum process. But, to no one’s surprise, the GOP is already trying to block the will of the people by erecting hurdles to make it harder for a citizen-led referendum to succeed. After initially rejecting the referendum effort, the Republican Secretary of State, Denny Hoskins, is now allowing it to proceed — but refusing to count the 100,000 citizen signatures that had already been collected. Why are Missouri Republicans going to all these lengths to hold on to power? It’s a part of a nationwide trend, John. Republicans know voters will reject their extreme agenda if given the opportunity. So now, they are doing everything in their power to silence people’s voices. The grassroots movement to build a more representative democracy needs you now more than ever.
Thanks so much, The NDRC Team
