John,
We know there’s a lot happening right now — attacks on voting rights, intimidation of election officials, and plenty of reasons to worry whether our democracy can withstand the pressure.
But here’s some good news: American democracy is still strong when people like YOU are working every day to protect it.
Across the country, Common Cause members and volunteers are standing up for the freedom to vote — helping their neighbors, defending election workers, and keeping elections fair, safe, and accessible.
And as we look toward the 2026 elections, we know what this moment demands — and we’re ready. Through our Common Cause state teams and nationwide Election Protection program, we’re growing a grassroots network in every state to safeguard the vote and ensure every voter, in every community, can cast a ballot freely and confidently.
Here’s a bit of what we’ve been doing:
-
In Arizona, our team is leading a coalition to ensure every voter can cast a ballot while pushing back against election deniers who refuse to certify results.
-
In California, we’re leading a dynamic coalition across Southern California — working to expand language access so voters receive election information in the language they speak and ensuring poll monitors are trained and ready in every major county.
-
In Colorado, we’re rolling out the new Colorado Voting Rights Act (which we built and spearheaded!), and already planning our 2026 voter protection plan with the Colorado Attorney General and Secretary of State.
-
In Florida, we’re operating a multilingual poll monitoring program in English, Spanish, and Haitian-Creole — and leading the charge for a “disaster-affected voter bill of rights” so no one loses access to the ballot after hurricanes.
-
In Georgia, we’re fighting legislative attacks on voting rights and continuing to organize volunteers to give public testimony, monitor local election boards, block bad roll purges, and report threats to voter access across the state.
-
In Hawaii, we’re leading the charge to expand in-person voting access, increase the number of drop boxes on each island, and working with lawmakers to pass Automatic Voter Registration in 2026.
-
In Maryland, we’re co-leading the Voting in Jail initiative — making sure incarcerated voters can cast ballots and that every eligible Marylander’s voice is heard.
-
In Massachusetts, we’re leading the statewide Election Protection coalition and fighting to pass Same Day Registration — breaking down barriers that keep eligible voters from participating and ensuring that every Bay Stater has an equal say.
-
In Michigan, we’re fighting new voting barriers — from proof-of-citizenship proposals to federal interference — while championing the Michigan Voting Rights Act and other pro-voter reforms.
-
In Minnesota, as targeted voter suppression intensifies, we’re partnering with community leaders and ethnic media to ensure voters get trusted election info in English, Spanish, Hmong, and Somali. Every voice matters, and we’re making sure it’s heard.
-
In Nebraska, we’re suing the Secretary of State to ensure that voter data is kept private and that the Federal Department of Justice doesn’t supersede local control of our elections..
-
In New Mexico, we’re expanding our statewide coalition and engaging with community leaders and new organizations to launch a digital volunteer education program to educate & engage with voters in rural and underserved communities.
-
In New York, our team leads the Let NY Vote coalition — recruiting and deploying volunteers at key polling places and running year-round education programs on Ranked Choice Voting so every voter knows how to cast and count their ballot.
-
In Ohio, we’re running a year-round Election Protection program to educate voters impacted by restrictive ID laws, monitor election certification, and defend against new anti-voter attacks.
-
In Oregon, we’re monitoring and responding to election-related interference, preempting election disinformation with accurate information, and supporting the national voter hotline operation here on the ground.
-
And in Texas, our team is mobilizing volunteers to assist voters across the state while also holding events to educate the public on the seventeen constitutional amendments on their ballots.
John, each of these efforts adds up to something powerful: a democracy that is resilient because people are putting in the work to protect it.
It’s proof that even in difficult times, hope is something we build — one volunteer, one polling place, and one voter at a time.
Thank you for being part of this movement. Together, we’re ensuring every voice counts in 2026 and beyond.
Onward,
—The team at Common Cause
