![]() The New York Times: “Supreme Court Appears Poised to Weaken Voting Rights Act” The Supreme Court is once again threatening the foundation of our democracy. During recent oral arguments in a Louisiana redistricting case, several conservative justices signaled they’re ready to gut the Voting Rights Act—specifically Section 2, the very heart of the law that protects voters from racially discriminatory practices like gerrymandering. This would allow Republicans to redraw congressional maps across the country to tip the scales in their favor and silence voters who may not agree with them.
At Trump’s request, Republicans have already been gerrymandering congressional maps in states across the country to rig next year’s election in their favor. Now, if the Supreme Court moves forward with weakening the Voting Rights Act, Republicans could eliminate more than a dozen Democrat-held districts across the South—furthering their effort to manipulate next year’s election and silence voters. This would make it even harder for Americans to vote, and it’s a direct threat to the very foundation of our democracy. Chris has fought to secure our elections before as a voting rights lawyer, and in Congress, he’s been working to defend your rights, and make it easier, not harder, for people to exercise their right to vote.
