Speaking of redistricting…
While several Republican-led states are redrawing their congressional maps in response to a recent court order, Democrats are attempting a power grab in blue states. The redistricting process could benefit Republicans by potentially adding 19 key GOP seats in states such as Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Texas, North Carolina, Nebraska, Florida, and Utah.
A current redistricting case before the Supreme Court raised Democrat alarm bells last week as it could repeal an antiquated statute that requires states to draw a certain number of race-based congressional districts. If the statute is overruled, it would allow several southern red states to redraw their maps, which would likely result in more Republican seats. Naturally, blue state Democrats are doing all they can to preserve flawed maps and draw new ones that endanger Republican districts.
However, House Republicans are looking at the bigger picture – and rightly so. Last Congress, Heritage Action issued a key cosponsorship in favor of the Equal Representation Act, which would stop blue states from counting illegal aliens in their census data, which is used to determine congressional apportionment, among other things. Preventing this would stop Democrats from cheating the system to win more seats in Congress – and the best part is that the bill is expected to be marked up in the coming months.
