King County Metro ridership growth second highest among nation’s largest transit agencies

Marking ongoing positive ridership growth, King County Metro posted a silver medal win among the 10 largest transit agencies nationwide.

Metro had an estimated 63 million boardings this year through August 31, which is an increase and 4.5 million higher than the same time last year. Comparing August 2024 and 2025, we’re seeing about 5,000 more morning boardings, 6,600 more midday boardings and 9,500 more afternoon boardings on an average weekday.

A regional rising star is the RapidRide G Line [ [link removed] ]. Although the new line only just celebrated its one-year anniversary, the G Line is already Metro’s 11th most frequently ridden route. Average weekday G Line boardings rose 86%, climbing from 3,600 in September 2024 to 6,700 in September 2025.

This is the second year in a row that Metro has been honored as a national leader in ridership growth. The American Public Transportation Association noted the agency’s second-highest rider increase in December 2024 [ [link removed] ].

Metro is proud to deliver safe, clean and reliable service, as we continue to invite more people to take transit. Additional Metro service is on the horizon, too, with an investment of more than 400,000 hours of bus service proposed in Executive Braddock’s 2026-27 budget [ [link removed] ].

We look forward to seeing you onboard! Plan your trip and learn how to ride on our “Where to?” webpage [ [link removed] ].

Celebrating the completion of bus shelter photomural project recognizing King County’s Latino community

These newest installations highlight the Mexican American artist Fulgencio Lazo’s painting “Mercado de Bicicletas” (Bicycle Market), which reflects Metro’s commitment to creating accessible, sustainable transportation options that connect communities.

“Hace 35 años uno de mis primeras experiencias como inmigrante fue tomar el autobús # 60 en Beacon Hill. Ahora es un gran honor compartir mi obra en la misma parada. Son círculos de la vida,” Dijo Lazo.

*"“As a newly arrived immigrant, one of my first experiences in Seattle thirty-five years ago was to catch the #60 on Beacon Hill. Now it is a great honor to share my work at this same bus stop. There are many circles in life,” Lazo said."*

After the dedication, the attendees and dancers walked the short distance to the new southbound transit island on Beacon Av S & S. Lander St. to view the beautiful new bus shelter artwork. The project is a partnership between Metro and Latino Northwest Communications.
