I know what that looks like when that promise is denied, John.
I grew up in the Jim Crow South, when fewer than 1% of Black residents in South Carolina could vote. I was a teenager before my parents cast a meaningful ballot.
It was voter suppression. And it’s happening again today.
North Carolina Republicans passed a new congressional map yesterday that will likely give the GOP one more red-leaning seat in next year’s midterms.
Texas and Missouri have already passed racially gerrymandered maps. Kansas, Ohio, Indiana, Florida, and Louisiana are lining up to follow suit.
That’s why this election matters so deeply. The same forces that tried to silence us then are working to do it again -- not with poll taxes or literacy tests, but with maps drawn in back rooms to strip citizens of their power.
