Dear John,

“I didn’t sign up for this.” It’s an increasingly common sentiment among Trump voters in the United States. Many, frustrated by their country’s broken system, have found that “shaking things up” actually meant making them much, much worse.

Perhaps we in Britain could learn from their mistake.

Nine months into Trump’s second term, and groceries aren’t cheaper. Rents are still rising. Wages remain stagnant. Federal troops patrol cities while masked immigration officers raid schools and hospitals. Approval ratings show that Trump regret ([link removed]) is setting in.

A handful of powerful people now have the White House on speed dial, while everyone else is left in the dust. The world’s richest corporations bankroll Trump’s $250 million White House ballroom while ordinary Americans lose their basic social safety net thanks to Elon Musk’s DOGE.

For years, both Americans and Brits have worried about vested interests pulling strings in our politics – and with good reason. Trump’s project has been to throw the gates to dark money wide open.

Two looming Supreme Court cases, including one launched by Vice-President JD Vance, threaten to erase what little remains of US campaign finance law, giving billionaires free rein to buy elections outright.

Here in Britain, we risk heading down a similar path. Nigel Farage and Reform UK welcome the same vested interests with open arms. They court untraceable crypto dark money donations. They’ve got the cash and they’re ready to copy the rest – from DOGE austerity to the militarised mass deportation machine.

We can see very clearly where this all ends, and it’s certainly not a path we have to follow. Trump’s America is what it looks like when democracy is bought and sold, when powerful interests win out over the voice of the people.

Farage wants to bring Trump’s oligarch revolution to the UK, but we don’t have to let him. The path forward is clear: let’s make our campaign finance system impenetrable to lobbyists and mega-donors. Let’s adopt a voting system that won’t hand Farage victory on a third of the vote. Let’s tackle Trump-aligned tech companies and their pervasive disinformation.

We’ve seen what happens when money trumps democracy (if you’ll pardon the pun).

In Britain, let’s make sure that people determine the future – not pounds.

All the best,

Matt
