We promised to amend the Building Act and the Resource Consent system to make it easier to build granny flats or other small structures. In fact, we over delivered. Our original commitment stated 60m2 but we decided that didn’t go far enough. The dwellings can be up to 70m2.

Friend,

New Zealand First has delivered yet another commitment from our coalition agreement.

We promised to amend the Building Act and the Resource Consent system to make it easier to build granny flats or other small structures up to 60m2, requiring only an engineer’s report.

In fact, we over delivered. Our original commitment stated 60m2 but we decided that didn’t go far enough. The dwellings can be up to 70m2.

Making it easier and more affordable to build small dwellings will further contribute towards New Zealand’s housing crisis.

Make sure you listen to Dr David Wilson’s speech in the house when we passed the legislation.

  • Shane Jones started the journey for consent-free small dwellings when he was first a Minister.
  • He secured detached buildings up to 30sqm in his last term as Minister.
  • Now, as part of our 2023 coalition agreement, we’ve got this policy across the line.

When we know we have pragmatic, effective policies, we will continue to advocate for them until they happen.

This is another commonsense policy from New Zealand First.

As always, we cannot progress policy without your help.
