In response to queries about stances of Presidential Candidates on abortion
To assist voters at election time, the Pro Life Campaign publishes the stances of candidates on the right to life. In most elections, there’s usually at least one candidate who holds a pro-life position. Unfortunately, in this election, there is no such candidate, which poses a dilemma for pro-life voters.
Acting in good conscience, all we can do is whatever we personally believe serves the pro-life issue, using our best judgment. Some people have indicated their intention to register a protest vote at the lack of candidate choice, but for those planning to vote for one of the candidates, see below for information regarding their stances on abortion.
Catherine Connolly has consistently campaigned in favour of abortion. She was clear in her support for repealing the Eighth Amendment and voted in favour of the abortion legislation that followed. Post 2018, she has called for wider abortion access.
Heather Humphreys expressed some concern in advance of the referendum in 2018 but ultimately supported repeal of the Eighth Amendment and voted in favour of the abortion legislation that followed. Post 2018, she has not supported wider abortion access.
Jim Gavin has withdrawn from the race but he will still appear on the ballot. He was never an elected representative so has no political record on the abortion issue. However when asked about it when he was first nominated, he confirmed that he had voted in favour of repeal of the Eighth Amendment.
Please, whatever you do, don’t stay home. Even when options are unsatisfactory, by taking part in the democratic process, we show that pro-life voters remain active, engaged, and determined to see better choices in future elections.
