Conference Season. I was in the hall for the Prime Minister's speech, to hear his positive vision for our country - one that is tolerant and open, determined to get back on its feet after almost 15 years of public sector cuts and economic mismanagement. He reminded us of the work the Government has started only just over a year of being back in office; tackling family poverty, standing up to racism, investing in our children’s future and improving the rights of working people. He listed the new legislation such as the Hillsborough Law, recognising the state of Palestine and so much more. It followed the speech that Hilary Benn MP gave at the dinner I hosted to celebrate my 10 years as B&I’s MP. Hilary drew parallels between the financial turmoil and worldwide movement of people faced by the 1945 Labour Government, and the challenges confronting Keir Starmer’s Government today. He then listed Attlee’s achievements; the formation of the NHS, hundreds of thousands of new Council homes built and reminded us of the work being done today; ending energy insecurity by investing in renewable energy, the creation of GB Rail; just some of the investment that will change peoples’ lives for the better. Following the shocking behaviour of supposed British patriots across the UK and in London in September, especially the unacceptable assaults on police officers who were there to protect the right to protest, I felt it was important to speak out. In Parliament I said that I am proud to represent a diverse, vibrant, and welcoming corner of West London. For generations Hounslow has been home to people of all faiths, all backgrounds, and all races. We have always been a welcoming Borough and a place where communities from around the world have lived next to each other, worked side by side and lived in harmony. Attempts to divide our communities will not work, and I will continue to work to represent all of my constituents. |

IN THE COMMONS in September: (a short Parliamentary session between summer and conference recesses!) Yvette Cooper, in response to my question about community cohesion, said that people must be able to come together and that we will not be divided, pursue hatred or pit people against each other I voted for a new law that will protect the rights private sector tenants, ending no-fault evictions, the rental bidding war and regular & excessive rent hikes. Cuts to the Adoption & Special Guardianship Fund continue to affect excellent services such as the Purple Elephant Project who support adopted children in dealing with the often extreme trauma of their early lives, a point I made in the Commons

Letters: Following Gordon Brown’s approach, I joined other MPs in writing to the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, demanding the gambling sector pays its share of taxes, such as VAT After being contacted by trans and trans-supporting constituents, I wrote to the Equalities Minister expressing my concern that future guidance and changes to the provision of sex segregated services will both go beyond the scope of the 2010 Equality Act and the recent Supreme Court ruling, while also having a detrimental impact on my constituents’ lives I wrote to the Foreign Secretary demanding the UK ends all arms sales to Israel, and to publish its response to the ruling by the International Court of Justice in regards to Israel's occupation of the West Bank. Several young people from Gaza due to start university courses, or get urgent medical treatment in the UK were delayed getting visas, so I wrote to the Home Secretary expressing my concern. I am glad that the issue has been resolved, and these young people have been able to travel

The Heart of Hounslow Health Centre on the Bath Road is the base for many of the borough’s community health services. At my visit I heard about their work, including that done by health visitors, supporting new mothers and identifying families that may need additional support. |

The Shobha Yatra ceremony and procession in Southall marks an important date in the Hindu calendar. At this year’s event it was good to see so many constituents who worship at the Mandir, as well as the Nepalese Ambassador, and the representative from the Indian High Commission who attended. |

The London Museum of Water & Steam in Brentford received a £2.6 million grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport's Museum Estate and Development Fund (MEND this year. I got a chance to look around the museum and see the historic steam engines, pipes from the 1700s, a lot of municipal signs and learn more about the heritage of the building. |

Policing. I met the police leadership in Hounslow Town Centre and heard that their town centre team is now almost back up to full strength. We were also able to discuss other issues such as recruitment and retention, local crime, knife crime and anti-social behaviour. |
The Cancer Research shop in Whitton is run by Linda and her team of dedicated volunteers. When I visited I heard about the positive difference charity shopping can make, not only towards funding important causes like cancer research but also to the environment by cutting waste. |
Cllr Tony Louki and I visited the Heston and Isleworth Fire Station (in Isleworth) and had a chance to see the new wildfire vehicle - built to reach tricky, remote areas—and watched the team in action during training. Here in West London, we’re at particular risk of wildfires due to the increasingly hot and dry summers and the large amount of gras land. We also discussed the challenges caused by illegal e-bike batteries and the building safety and cladding crisis. |

West London Welcome supports hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers across West London. My visit gave me a chance to hear about the changes we need to make to the system more humane to those people who, by definition, are fleeing extreme violence and conflict, mainly from failed states. I am glad the Government are tackling the backlog in asylum decision making and are ending the contracts that have enabled millions of pounds to be siphoned off into the pockets of owners of private companies leaving asylum seekers existing in appalling conditions. |

Bridgelink Community Centre in Isleworth is a great community space which has a community pantry and frequently hosts youth groups, coffee mornings and other events. I had the chance to hear more about the work being done by local groups such as Action Isleworth Mothers, set up to help mothers and young people across Hounslow who are affected and impacted by issues connected to serious youth violence. |

The Safer Partnerships and Violence Against Women and Girls team at Hounslow Council , provide direct support, and also training for staff about domestic abuse and coercive control. When I met Jacqueline who heads the team, I told her about the growing number of calls and emails I get from women affected by domestic abuse and who have been made homeless or are in temporary accommodation. I was pleased to hear about the work Hounslow Council are doing to support vulnerable women here. |

Tidefest As an MP representing a constituency on the Thames I know how important the river is for our local economy and local sports clubs. It was good to see the 'In The Drink' campaign which is campaigning to replace single use plastic cups with reusable alternatives in an effort to reduce pollution and litter in our river. |
The Heston Action Group took me for a walk across the vast green space between Heston and Osterley Park and voiced their concerns about the management of the privately owned space and the fly tipping along paths leading to it – issues I have now raised with Hounslow. |
At West Thames College I met new Principal Marta Gajewska. WTC was rated outstanding by Ofsted in December 2024, is rated the top FE college in London and they have just been awarded an extra £1 million by the Government to further improve their facilities. |

Paragon, Brentford. Notting Hill Housing Group showed us round the student and shared ownership flats that have lain empty since the emergency evacuation in 2020, which was due to significant building faults. Everything but the structure is being replaced and the whole estate should be occupied again sometime next year |
