View wildlife — but keep it safe
Fall migration is underway, and many animals are on the move. Fall and winter can be a great time to see wildlife as they move out of high elevation and into areas more accessible to humans. Going into the field to view wildlife can be a magical experience, but it’s important to keep some things in mind.
*1) Your safety is first and foremost. *
Wildlife of all shapes and sizes can be unpredictable in their behavior. It is important to give them plenty of space while you are viewing them to allow yourself time to respond to their actions.
If an animal of any size approaches you, back away slowly. Getting too close to wildlife can lead to dangerous encounters as animals feel threatened or confined.
A good rule of thumb is to stay 300 feet or more away from large carnivores and moose, and 100 feet or more away from other ungulates like deer, elk and pronghorn.
*2) The safety of the wildlife you are viewing.*
Giving them plenty of space is an excellent start. Another key component is ensuring they stay wild and not dependent on human food.
It can be enticing to lure a cute chipmunk to you using your potato chips. By feeding it, you are increasing its dependence. This dependence can turn into major problems as winter approaches and it encounters fewer people. It can starve or become aggressive toward the few people it does encounter.
This principle also applies to larger wildlife such as bears and mule deer. It is never a good idea to feed wildlife.
