The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is hosting Michigan’s one-of-a-kind event designed for sustainability business professionals, sustainability community professionals, environmental staff, EHS (environmental, health, and safety) staff, and community leaders to:

This year’s conference sessions will include general sustainability topic themes and those that highlight *Food Waste Reduction and Diversion,* such as composting, food rescue, food waste source reduction, food upcycling, food waste reduction technology, and food waste education.

In 2022, the MI Healthy Climate Plan [ [link removed] ] outlined an ambitious goal: cut Michigan’s food waste in half by 2030. With just five years to go, the clock is ticking—and momentum is building. Let's take stock of what's been done, highlight the actions underway, and explore the bold steps still needed to meet Michigan's food waste challenge head-on. Danielle founded Make Food Not Waste in 2017 and serves as its Executive Director. She has led the organization through the creation of two Upcycling Kitchens and the launch of Every Bit Counts, a targeted approach to cutting Michigan’s food waste in half by 2030.

"*Using Food Rescue as a Template for Community Sustainability Investments and Cross-Sector Sustainable Business*"

There is enough edible food disposed of in Michigan’s landfills from commercial businesses and produce left unharvested on its farms to provide more than three meals a day to all of the people currently impacted by food insecurity in the state. It’s an economic loss more than double the total value of all the recyclable material disposed of in Michigan’s landfills each year. This session, *moderated by Daniel Schoonmaker, Executive Director of the Michigan Sustainable Business Forum*, will explore how addressing barriers to food rescue can increase engagement in community sustainability initiatives and provide cross-disciplinary insights for businesses from any sector. It will also introduce the Double Food Donation campaign, which has convened partners from across the state to increase the amount of surplus food in the charitable food system, complementing efforts to reduce food loss and waste through improved marketing strategies, pollution prevention, and business optimization.

Whether you are joining us as a community leader or a business leader, you’ll walk away from this conference with the network of partners, the practical tools, and the creative fuel you need to keep on course with this rapidly evolving era. The conference will provide up to seven continuing education hours (CEH)/Professional Development Hours (PDH). 

We are also offering a *Post-Conference Catalyst Communities Walking Tour and Workshop [ [link removed] ] *on November 7 from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. This event is specifically for Michigan's local government leaders (elected and appointed officials, and staff) to celebrate successes, share challenges, and deepen connections within the community of local government sustainability practitioners. The post-conference workshop provides up to two CEHs/PDHs.
