Dear friend,
This Monday, our country celebrated "Columbus Day" which has been once again nationally recognized thanks to current administration.
Do you know what I have to say to that?
F*** Christopher Columbus. F*** any holiday that celebrates violence and genocide.
In 2021, former President Biden issued the first-ever presidential proclamation of Indigenous Peoples Day. This day celebrates the Native tribes that are from this land and protect this land. It also brings awareness to the history of what Native People were subject to when their land was colonized into what is now known as the United States.

This history is important; the real, ugly history of the United States of America. Our communities are still dealing with the effects of colonization, something that seems more visible now than ever with the impacts of ICE raids on Black and Brown communities and the rollbacks on protection against endemic and pandemic diseases. In so many spaces of our country, the echos of colonialism and Indigenous genocide can be felt; It is essential to name and stand against these acts of harm.
It is important to me that when I'm elected to The California State Senate, that everyone in my district experiences economic equity, freedom, and autonomy.
This is something we can do at a state level. Huge strides in the Land Back movement were made this year via the restoration of more than 17,000 acres to the stewardship of the Yurok People of Northern California. This was the largest Land Back deal in California history.
These are the kinds of efforts I intend to give my full support to when elected.

Los Angeles is on land that belongs to the Gabrielino/Tongva and Chumash tribes.
The Tongva Tribe is still not nationally recognized. Federal recognition, while it has a complex history that does not determine the legitimacy of a tribe, can help tribes preserve their culture and have autonomy over their lands. As a state, California can help with funds, grants, environmental sanctuaries and more.
If we are to move forward as a state and a country, we need to work together so that everyone has what they need.
I pledge to advocate for the Indigenous People of California when elected, to listen to what tribes need, and to work together with every part of my community.
Happy Belated Indigenous Peoples Day.
