North Carolina Dem Gov Roy Cooper Vetoes Bill Requiring Police Cooperation With ICE
What Happened:
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed a bill that would have made it mandatory for state and local law enforcement to comply with detainer requests from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Why You Should Care:
For one, state Republicans are blasting Cooper’s decision, arguing it shows he cares more about illegal immigrants than the safety of North Carolinians. Just last week, an illegal immigrant was picked up by ICE in Charlotte, after he had been arrested on rape charges and subsequently released. In that case, local police rejected an ICE detainer request.
