“Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind.”
-Virginia Woolf
Dear, John
It’s Banned Books Week, a busy time here at the National Coalition Against Censorship.
Created by the American Library Association in 1982, the week serves as an annual reminder of the salient harms that come from book bans. It brings together advocates, students, parents, librarians, teachers, authors, booksellers, publishers, and readers like you to advocate for the value of free and open access to information ([link removed]) .
Unfortunately, book banning has only accelerated in the last few years.
That’s why our work in training, educating, and advocating for students, teachers, parents, and librarians who are fighting against book bans in their communities is so important right now.
Will you make a donation in support of our right to read programs today? ([link removed])
Your contribution will support our Right to Read network, a national, grassroots program that connects and trains students, teachers, parents, and librarians to stand up, speak out, and safeguard the right to read in their own communities.
Your gift will help fund our Right to Read Night annual program, which provides a vital hub for right to read advocates to share their love of at-risk literature – and strategies for protecting it. This year, over 70 groups are hosting a Right to Read program across the US, using the NCAC’s toolkits and discussion questions to have community conversations about Laurie Halse Anderson’s Chains.
And your generosity will fund the Coalition's Youth Free Expression program, which empowers young people with the knowledge, tools, and opportunities to assert and defend their right to free expression all year long.
Your donation today will open the gates, unlock the doors, and loosen the bolts against book censorship. ([link removed])
Thank you,
Lee Rowland
