Trigger warning: police brutality, racism, violence
|
Team,
Right now Americans across the nation are fighting for justice after the recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain and so many others. While we are in the midst of an unprecedented moment of reckoning, we are reminded today -- on the four year anniversary of the murder of Philando Castile at the hands of police -- that police violence is not a new problem.
Four years later, I’m still haunted by the horrifying image of Philando being shot seven times by police while his girlfriend and her child watched. The killing of innocent Black people by police must end now.
That’s why the House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act -- a set of reforms meant to be a first step in addressing police brutality and protecting Black lives.
But Mitch McConnell is refusing to bring it up for a vote in the Senate. I urge you to read more about this legislation and then add your name as a citizen co-sponsor to the Justice in Policing Act NOW!
It’s been incredible to see so many American of all races, ages, and walks of life, come together to demand solutions to police brutality. And now, we must channel this energy into legislation.
The Justice in Policing Act aims to create police reforms in a variety of ways: increasing transparency by creating a National Police Misconduct Registry, ending the use of chokeholds, reducing the unnecessary militarization of local police departments, and many others.
But we can’t get this passed in the Senate without your support. So, please, step up and join us by sign on today!
Yours in Service,
