John,
On our holiest day, we gathered to pray, fast, and seek
atonement.
And in one corner of the Diaspora, Jews were murdered for
it.
When I heard the news of the terror attack at a Manchester
synagogue, I had just arrived at my own synagogue. I immediately
thought: It could have been here.
This horrific attack, perpetrated by Jihad Al-Shamie, a British
citizen of Syrian descent, must be a wake-up call to all
governments:
The path of hate and radicalization leads to the murder of
Jews.
A government’s number one responsibility is to protect its people.
Which is why I’m asking for your help today.
We need our federal and provincial governments to significantly
increase their investments in the security of our community. Because
amid the terror in Manchester, we also saw that security readiness and
preventative measures save lives.
Our Canadian Jewish community has been stepping up in our security
preparedness. While governments have increased support, we need even
greater investment and program reform to keep people safe at Jewish
institutions. This includes emergency training, security guards,
protective technology and barriers, and more.
If you can spare one minute, you can make a real
difference.
federal and provincial leaders: It’s time to strengthen the
security of the Jewish community.
May the memory of those murdered in Manchester always be for a
blessing. Now and always, we stand with our Jewish brothers and
sisters in Britain and around the world.
Am Yisrael Chai.
