On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence established the principle that "all men are created equal." Transforming that principle into reality for all people has been the struggle of our nation for nearly 250 years -- and today, the struggle continues.

As we celebrate the birth of our nation, and as we recommit ourselves to the work of building a more perfect union, I hope you'll take a moment to reflect on the day with me:

While we won't have the usual big parades and gatherings this year, we still have an opportunity to celebrate the meaning of America in our conversations with families, friends, and neighbors.
