Dear Friends, Family, & Neighbors,

Happy 4th of July!

With only four months until the General Election in November, now is the time for us to unite as a community and focus on our health and well-being. It is also a time to reflect on our priorities moving forward. With a looming financial crisis and record level unemployment, our focus going forward has to be on economic growth and workforce opportunities, especially in rural Colorado. More importantly, we must ensure that the financial crisis does not impact our education system - our kids cannot fall behind and our teachers must be equipped with the resources they need to do their job. It is essential that workers, students, parents, and teachers alike feel safe going back to work and school, and that we take all necessary precautions to curb the spread of COVID-19.

As we get ready to celebrate the 4th of July as a country, this year will be different than it has been in previous years, in part due to the coronavirus pandemic. Many of the special events we normally attend in groups will have to be postponed or be reduced in size to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 and try to keep ourselves and our neighbors safe. As we are seeing surges in COVID-19 cases across the country, it is crucial that we continue to make small personal sacrifices including wearing a mask in public and maintaining physical distance from others so that we can stop the spread. Be safe and creative in how you celebrate with your family. Our country has always found creative and innovative ways to rise to any occasion to address the needs of society. Whether you plan to celebrate this year in your home with a few close friends and family or head out into public, please keep your safety and the safety of others in mind by socially distancing from others and being responsible and
considerate. Let’s also remember and thank our servicemen and women who make our country safe and make us proud to be Americans.

Finally, we have seen massive protests and demonstrations over the past months in response to systemic police brutality and the insidious racism still experienced by Black Americans and people of color on a daily basis. These demonstrations should remind us that the freedom we fought for and won in 1776 was not then intended to include freedom and equality for African Americans or women or people of color. If we are to move our country forward toward a more perfect union, we need to reflect on and reckon with our past. We can work on a better future by talking to one another, having open and productive conversations about race and the systemic racism so many of our fellow Americans face, and discussing how we can strive to make positive, lasting changes in this country. I encourage each of you to get involved and have those difficult conversations with other members of the community and the organizations that serve us. We must continue to work to uphold the ideals on which this country was
founded and work toward true equality and justice for all.

I want to thank the community for their support in the primary election. Now the real work toward a better Colorado begins! I humbly remain your committed advocate for Southern Colorado and will not stop working to ensure that our rural communities have the resources we need to thrive now and into the future. Please reach out if you have concerns about our community or ideas on how I can help to make it better at the legislature. This fall I hope to have your support to get more done for this great community. God Bless America, and Happy Independence Day!

Thank you,

State Representative Donald E. Valdez
