ALERT: Trump and Republicans are trying to abuse the U.S. Census to grab more power. Donate now to fight back >> [[link removed]]
Math is math, right John?
Counting shouldn’t be complicated.
And yet, here we are watching as Donald Trump and his extreme Republican enablers are pushing to upend the U.S. Census to reshape congressional maps across the country.
In a move that NPR called “unprecedented,” Trump is trying to exclude key populations from being counted and calling for a mid-decade census. It’s illegal and unconstitutional, but since when has that ever stopped them?
The result of a census “redo” would be devastating for millions of people who would lose access to critical services — and for fair representation in elections nationwide. Republican politicians are hoping that by excluding or undercounting certain communities, they could grow their artificial electoral advantage. Remember — the constitution requires counting ALL people!
The U.S. Census shouldn’t be a partisan political tool — and we’re going to do everything possible to fight back against this outrageous Republican power grab. Donate now to power our work for fair maps and fair representation — the stakes are simply too high to remain on the sidelines. [[link removed]]
Let’s clear a few things up about the census:
1. The president does not have final authority over the U.S. Census, according to the U.S. Constitution. That’s Congress’s job.
2. The 14th Amendment requires the “whole number of persons in each state” to be counted in the census and used to determine how presidents and members of Congress are elected. That has always been interpreted to mean all people, regardless of their legal status.
3. The census has never included a question about citizenship status, so Trump’s current push to exclude residents without legal status contradicts more than 200 years of precedent.
4. The Census Bureau’s own research concluded that including a citizenship question is likely to lead to faulty self-reported data and discourage Latino or Asian American households from responding — which would mean forfeiting billions in funding for critical services from the federal government.
It’s clear that passing new, gerrymandered maps in places like Texas and Missouri is only one part of Republicans' plans to give themselves a further unfair electoral advantage. If they can reshape the census to tighten their grip on power, there may be no turning back.
