Dear John,

We’re heading to Liverpool today as Labour begins its second party conference since returning to power.

As always, we will arrive with a clear focus on forcing the government to prioritise making our democracy fit for our time. In particular – we’re there to continue leading the charge for the electoral reform.

On Sunday afternoon, we’ll be at the #Labour4PR rally on ‘Renewing Britain’s Democracy’ as part of our role driving forward the work of the APPG for Fair Elections.

This will include contributions from many of our APPG member MPs, who will be adopting our calls for a National Commission on Electoral Reform (NCER), as well as a keynote speech from Andy Burnham – one of only a handful of appearances the in-demand Greater Manchester Mayor will be making at conference.

Without getting sucked in to thinking of a Labour leadership challenge, we are very pleased a potential future party leader is calling for a change to our voting system that Britain has been crying out for – as he has been again this week in a profile piece in the conference edition of the New Statesman.

On Monday afternoon, we continue to the lead the call for electoral reform by hosting our own event, in collaboration with Labour for a New Democracy and the Fabian Society. The APPG will lead ‘Make It Count: How Labour can deliver electoral reform & rebuild trust in politics’.

Featuring Chair of the APPG, Alex Sobel MP, as well as member Lizzi Collinge MP, the call for a NCER will be at the forefront of this event, discussing our recently published Terms of Reference, and explaining which this is the only logical next step in the push for meaningful electoral reform.

Hosted in the city centre rather than at the conference complex, the event is open to non-conference pass-holders. So if you can make it to Liverpool for 16:15 on Monday – please do join us!

If you aren’t attending conference, or simply can’t make it along to either of these two events – fear not. We’ll keep you updated across social media, on both our Open Britain and APPG for Fair Elections social media accounts – so follow us on BlueSky ([link removed]) , Facebook ([link removed]) , and Instagram ([link removed]) !

At a time when this Labour government faces big questions over its collapse in public support since being elected, amid a surge in support for Reform UK, and, more recently, scandals and reshuffles which have plunged the party into a Deputy Leadership contest – we’re focusing on what we can control.

This weekend, we’re ignoring the noisy politics, and ensuring we fight for the democracy we all want to see. In an age where it feels like many politicians are putting themselves or their party ahead of the interests of the country, we’re heading to Liverpool with the sole intention of representing YOU – our supporters.

We’re only able to ensure your voice is heard at events like Labour Party conference thanks to your backing. Your generous donations enable us to send a dedicated team there to stage our events. And with your support – we’ll continue to fight for issues you care about.

Thanks for standing with Open Britain, and thanks for standing up for a stronger democracy.

James
