Today is World Tourism Day: On World Tourism Day, we’re reflecting on the milestones in protecting children from sexual exploitation in travel and tourism. What began as a call to action from ECPAT International has grown into a global movement that has secured landmark laws, trained millions of hotel staff, and continues to build safer systems for children worldwide.

Children Deserve Protection, Not Midnight Deportations: 76 Guatemalan children, some as young as three, were loaded onto an airplane like bulk cargo over Labor Day weekend. These children were spared only thanks to the quick actions of their legal counsel and a federal judge awakened at 2:30 am, who put a halt to this charade. Under the Optional Protocol on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography (OPSC), the United States has a moral and legal obligation to protect children in its care.
