Picture this: On vast western ranges, wild horses gallop freely across the open lands. Their hooves drumming a steady rhythm on the earth. Their manes flow majestically with the wind as they roam, pausing now and then to graze or stop at the watering hole or to let the youngest foals catch up to the herd.

The wild horses and burros are safe from terrifying helicopter roundups, and a lifetime separated from all they hold dear — their family and their freedom.

Tomorrow is National Public Lands Day, so it’s worth reflecting on how these lands are used — and what’s at stake for the animals that call them home.

Our public lands can be a place where wild horses and burros are rounded up and confined in holding facilities, where lands are overgrazed and industrialized, where ecosystems are destroyed, and thousands of America’s iconic animals are slaughtered every year.

Or it can be a place where wild herds can roam safely, biodiversity is supported by natural grazers, and horses and burros are managed through in-the-wild conservation practices.
