Government shutdowns are bad for the country. Every one of us knows that.
But we’re a few days away from a possible shutdown because President Trump is refusing to do what has to happen: negotiate with Congressional leaders.
Trump told Republicans to write a budget they liked and “not even deal with Democrats.” So Democrats wrote an alternative budget bill that keeps the government open while protecting everyday people from massive health care cuts.
This was not only better for our constituents — it was also consistent with what many GOP leaders are saying needs to be done.
Last weekend, Democrats in Congress asked the President to meet with leaders of both parties to negotiate a final agreement. This is the way it’s always done. And President Trump agreed.
But get this: two days later, the President cancelled the meeting, refused to meet, and threatened to fire federal employees if he didn’t get his way!
America needs a president who isn’t afraid to negotiate with Congress to keep the U.S. government open. And America needs senators and representatives who won’t accept a president shutting down the government rather than sit down at the negotiating table.
Without colleagues across the aisle who are willing to work in good faith, we just can’t make real progress — on preventing shutdowns OR on the countless other critical issues that we need to focus on, like lowering costs, protecting voting rights and reproductive freedom, and reducing gun violence.
